Keir Gilchrist as Craig Gilner
Craig is the protagonist and the narrator of the story. He is 15 years old and suffers from depression which is caused by all the stress in his life. Craig became depressed a few weeks after beginning to study at a very presigious high school. Craig meets Nia and Aaron at Executive Pre-Professional High School. When Craig stops taking his Zoloft he seriously considers suicide which causes him to check himself into a psychiatric hospital. While at the hospial Criag meets many influencial people and learns a lot about his life. Craig's experiences at the hospital
Zoë Kravitz as Nia
Nia goes to Executive Pre-Professional High School with Craig and Aaron. She is Aaron's girlfirend, but Craig also likes her. Nia is also depressed and takes similar medication to Craig's, however her depression is not as bad as Craig's.
Thomas Mann as Aaron
Aaron is Craig's best friend and Nia's boyfriend. Aaron and Craig met when they started school at Executive Pre-Professionl High School. Aaron has a big influence on Craig, but not necessarily a good one; Aaron first introduced Craig to pot. When Aaron learns that Craig is depressed he does not react well and fights with Craig over the phone. Aaron later apologizes to Craig for getting mad at him.
Viola Davis as Dr. Minerva
Dr. Minerva is Craig's therapist. She is Craig's favourite therapist of all the ones he has had. Dr. Minerva plays a crucial role in Craig's journey through depression, and understands him. She is the person who suggests that Craig switch schools.
Zach Galifianakis as Bobby
Bobby is one of the patients at the psychiatric hospital. He and Craig form a quick bond, and Craig looks up to him as a sort of mentor. Bobby goes to a job interview for which Craig lends him a shirt. When Bobby gets the job he is thankful to Craig for lending him some clothes.
Matthew Maher as Humble
Humble is another patient at the hospital, and Craig's first friend there. Humble tells Craig about the other patients at the hospital. According to Bobby, Humble is worse than most of the other paients.
Bernard White as Muqtada
Muqtada is Craig's roommate at the hospital. He is an egyptian man who does not like to leave his room. Craig is able to help Muqtada by giving him a egyptian record to listen to.
Emma Roberts as Noelle
Noelle is one of Craig's closest friends at the hospital. Noelle faces a lot of societal pressure which causes her to cut her face and be admitted to the hospital for self harm. Noelle becomes depressed because of this pressure put on her by society, specifically boys, to act and look a certain way. Noelle and Craig develope strong feelings towards each other.
